A superb antique Victorian vanity, sewing and jewellery box. Nicely figured Rosewood veneer. Beautiful interior with original navy velvet coverings and cut glass bottles and jars. Original working lock and period key.

This is a superb antique Rosewood veneered, vanity, sewing and jewellery box. It comes with its original antique bottles and jars, and has several compartments for storing jewellery or sewing items. The box is Victorian, circa 1870/1880.
The Exterior
This box a beautiful Rosewood veneered finish which has a rich warm colour and lovely figuration.
The lid has a beautiful inlaid Mother of Pearl cartouche and there is a complementary inlaid Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box has its original working brass lock, brass stop hinges, and a replacement period key.
The bottom of the box has an old replacement red felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The box's carcass is made of solid Mahogany.
The Interior
The interior has a removable storage tray at the front which has three compartments for jewellery storage or sewing items; two compartments which hold little storage jars, and a pin cushion. Behind this is a further compartment for jewellery/sewing items, plus two compartments which hold bottles. Beneath the tray is a further large compartment for jewellery or sewing items. Brooches can be attached to the pin cushion if desired. The jars and bottles are original to the box.
The inside of the lid has a pull down flap with a correspondence pouch behind it. This is for the storage of special/important documents, letters and cherished photos.
The bottles are nicely shaped and have cut glass lids and bases. The jars have fluted decoration and polished silver plated lids.
The compartments at the top have their original dark navy blue velvet covered lids. Those in the tray have their original pretty Mother of Pearl 'button' handles. The lid to the rear compartment has a silk pull tab.
The storage tray has metal side handles which enable you to lift it up with ease.
The bases of the compartments, including the large lower compartment, have new blue satin panels.
The flap inside the lid has its original navy blue velvet covering and the surrounding walls have their original blue leather cloth linings. The flap is secured/released with its original gold metal 'dial' clasp.
Note: The compartments were originally designed to hold both jewellery and sewing items. The new satin panels on their bases have made them much more functional for jewellery storage.
Condition
This wonderful box is in very good condition for its age. It has sound structure and no loss of veneer. There are a few 'age' lines within the veneer but these do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior velvet is still in lovely condition with no splits or fraying. It has only minor light age related wear.
There is a teeny chip to one of the small Mother of Pearl button handles, and minor grazing to the ends of the stoppers in the glass bottles. The bottles and jars are in great condition with no chips or cracks. There is light tarnish/wear to the silver plated lids.
The hinges and lock are in good working order.
