A superb antique Victorian jewellery box with striking Walnut veneer. Completely original velvet lined interior with multiple storage compartments and drawers. Circa 1870/1880.

This is a superb antique Victorian jewellery box, dating to 1870/1880. It has striking Walnut veneer and a completely original interior with multiple storage compartments and drawers.
The Exterior
This box has wonderful Walnut veneer which has beautiful figuration and colour variation.
The lid has its original inset solid brass handle and also its original brass piano hinge. Both have an extremely decorative engraved finish. There is a complementary inlaid brass escutcheon to the keyhole.
The box has a beautiful replacement lock and lock keep, both being made of solid white metal. These are antique, and beautifully engraved, in keeping with the period and the original handle/hinges of the box. A new key has been fitted to the replacement antique lock. Please note this catches slightly upon unlocking and we therefore advise using the key for decorative purposes only. Please also refer to the notes on antique locks, given below.
The Interior
The entire interior is completely original and still in excellent condition despite the age of the box. There is a fixed storage tray with multiple compartments and ring storage sections, plus two drawers beneath which have further numerous compartments. The drawers are concealed behind the drop down front of the box.
The four side compartments of the tray have a concave shape, enabling jewellery to be lifted out with ease.
There is a lovely narrow compartment next to the front left compartment which was designed to hold stick pins. This has a lovely sloping form, again enabling easy removal of the jewellery placed within it.
The centre of the tray has a pocket watch holder which doubles up as a lid to the compartment beneath. The holder could now be more aptly used as storage for a large circular locket or pendant.
The top drawer has four deep storage compartments and two beautifully engraved brass swing handles. The bottom drawer has eight compartments and beautiful engraved shield shaped adornments. Both drawers are securely seated and the bottom drawer has a quality spring opening mechanism. This drawer is released by pressing down the button located in the centre of the lid's hinge.
With the eighteen compartments plus ring storage sections, this box has a fabulous amount of jewellery storage! With the compartments being numerous and of various shapes and sizes, you are able to separate your different types of jewellery; the smallest for earrings and little pendants for example. You could also use the different sections of the box to keep your gold and silver separate.
The interior has its original emerald green velvet panels and linings. The panels to the bases of the compartments are padded, as is the panel to the inside of the lid. This padding provides cushioned protection for jewellery. The tray's centre compartment has a padded watered silk panel.
The interior walls have a leathercloth finish and the top edges of the tray and drawers have a lovely gilt finish.
Condition
This beautiful box is in excellent condition for its age. It has sound structure and no cracks.
All of the veneer is present and intact, and the hinges are still in great working order.
The condition of the lock is as detailed above.
All of the interior velvet is in lovely condition with no splits. It has some light wear/marks from previous jewellery storage, mainly confined to the panel on the inside of the lid. There are some marks to the leathercloth finish on the walls of the compartments.
