This is a superb high quality, very stylish, and very well constructed jewellery box. It dates to the mid 20th century, circa 1940s. The interior compartment has been refurbished and the inside of the lid has an additional feature.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Mahogany. It has a stylish wide flat streamlined design.
The edges of the lid have beautiful moulding and a frame of very decorative geometric inlay. The same inlay is around the edges of the body of the box, and also around the feet.
The front of the box has a lovely inlaid bone cartouche and the box is complete with its original hinges.
The build quality of this box is excellent! It is very likely a 'one off' box which has been made by a very skilled craftsman.
The Interior
The interior compartment has been newly refurbished with a padded gold satin panel to the base. The panel is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. The compartment is spacious and will hold a good amount of jewellery. It is deep enough to include the storage of broad bangles and watches.
The interior also has its original lift up stay hinge which adds support to the lid.
The inside of the lid has the new addition of a very decorative and very large oval inlaid plaque which features beautiful floral marquetry inlay. The inlay consists of a variety of colourful woods. The plaque is from Sorrento and it dates to the same period as the box.
The new satin panel and Sorrento plaque have been added by our skilled box restorer.
