This is a superb high-quality antique jewellery box, attributed to the renowned box and furniture maker, William Norrie. It is made of timbers native to New Zealand which are a particular feature of Norrie's craftmanship. It also features a pencilled drawing on the base which is another charateristic Norrie trademark. The drawing is a sketch of the inlaid design on the lid and it details the native New Zealand timbers that have been used.
Date
Circa 1890/1900
The Exterior
This fabulous box has beautiful marquetry inlaid on the lid, consiting of several varieties of woods that are native to New Zealand. The inlay has been beautifully positioned to create a geometric eight pointed star.
The box has its original hinges which are still in very good working order.
The Interior
The interior compartment has been newly refurbished. It has a plump padded royal blue velvet panel to the base and quality blue paper linings to the walls.
Condition
This box is still in very good condition despite its 120/130 years of age. This is testament to how very well made the box is. It is structually sound and has no cracks.
All of the inlay is present and secure.
There is one small replacement piece of inlay to the front right corner of the lid. This doesn't match the adjacent inlay but it blends in fairly well.
