This is a superb high-quality antique jewellery box, made in Italy and dating to between 1890/1900. It has multiple layered swing opening compartments and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The box is an extremely rare example of its type. Most of this design have only 2 swing compartments - this particular box has 6!
The box is a wonderful piece of Arts & Crafts, featuring elaborate metalwork to the lid, front and sides.
The Exterior
This box is made of Walnut and Mahogany. Its lid and base have a flowing contoured form and there is a complementary raised and contoured panel on the lid.
There is superb decorative pierced metalwork to the lid, front and sides of the box. This has a beautiful Gothic design. The metals consist of pewter and copper and each piece of metalwork is securely attached with its original brass pins.
The box has a light stained finish and stands slightly raised on its original beautifully turned bun feet. The bottom of the box has a darker stain.
The box has its original polished brass hinges and its original high-quality European brass lock. It also has its original key which locks the box securely. Further details of the European lock are below.
The bottom of box has hand chalked and hand pencilled numbers, both of which are identical. These are likely the maker's model/design number.
The Interior
The interior has six swing opening compartments plus a further larger compartment at the bottom of the box.
All seven compartments have their original velvet panels. These are padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery. There is a matching padded panel to the inside of the lid which is beautifully inset. The velvet is a deep burgundy red shade.
The European Lock
This beautiful box has a wonderful European lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn of the key! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn of the key if desired.
Notes About Antique Locks
We would like to make you aware that antique locks can occasionally malfunction. They are already very old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use.
We are not responsible for locks that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
Condition
This wonderful old box is still in excellent condition despite its 120/130 years of age. It has sound structure and no nasty dents or scratches.
All of the metalwork is present, intact and securely fixed. There is some tarnish to the metal.
The hinges and lock are still in very good working order. There is some tarnish to the surface of the lock.
The interior velvet panels (apart from those in the top two compartments) are in very good condition. Those in the top compartments are faded and worn but are still complete and neatly fitted. It is apparent that these were the most used compartments by the original owner/s of the box and the fading will have occured due to the box being displayed open in a very sunny room. The wear is commensurate with age and honest use and we personally feel that it adds to the charm of the box. The wear will not appeal to the tastes of all, so please consider this before purchasing the box. There is minor light wear to the panel inside the lid.
There is a minor stress hairline split to the bottom right rear corner of the box. This does not affect the structure or functionality of the box in any way.
