Wonderful large Italian leather jewellery chest with tooled decoration and gilt metal fitments. Circa 1960s/1970s. The interior has its original plush velour linings. Working lock and key and heaps of storage space!

This is a fabulous high-quality large vintage leather jewellery chest, made in Florence, Italy. It has the maker's stamp embossed on the bottom and is complete with its original working lock and key. It dates to the 1960s/1970s and is in excellent condition for its age.
The Exterior
This chest has a wonderful real leather finish which has an abundance of beautiful tooled decoration. This is on the lid and all four sides. There are beautifully embossed scrolling leaves and large raised elongated diamonds.
There is a beautiful gilt metal Cherub escutcheon to the keyhole, decorative shaped gilt metal studs upon the diamonds, decorative gilt metal swing handles on each side, plus wonderful gilt metal Gargoyle feet applied to the bottom outside corners. The box also has its original piano hinge and original working lock and pretty key.
The bottom of the chest has its original gold embossed maker's stamp and embossed MADE IN ITALY stamp.
The Maker
This fabulous chest was made by M.CINTOLESI in P.ZA PITTI (Piazza de Pitti), FIRENZE (More commonly known as Florence in England).
Florence is the capital of the region of Tuscany. It was founded in 59BC and its name derives from the original Latin 'Florentia'.
The Interior
The interior has a removable storage tray at the top which has two large compartments plus a ring storage section. There is a further single compartment beneath the tray which is very large and very deep! This will hold a vast amount of jewellery including large pieces such as broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
The Storage Tray
The sides and top edges of the storage tray have a beautiful dark russet leather finish. The bottom of the tray has a simulated leather covering. There are lovely gilt metal handles on the storage tray which enable you to lift it out of the chest with ease.
All of the compartments plus the inside of the lid, have their original plush mustard velour linings.
Condition
This very stylish chest is still in excellent condition despite its 50-60 years of age. It has sound structure and no damage.
The interior linings are still in very good condition with only minor wear and a few little marks.
There is minor light wear to the leather which is commensurate with age and use.
All of the gilt metal fitments are secure.
The lock and hinges are still in very good working order. The key securely locks the box.
