This is a superb high-quality jewellery box. It was made in Sorrento, in Southern Italy and it dates to the 1930s Art Deco period. The box has beautiful marquetry inlay and the interior compartment has been refurbished by our skilled box restorer. The box is complete with its original working lock.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Walnut. It has a beautiful 'flat' streamlined form which was popular throughout the Art Deco period. It also has beautifully contoured sides.
The lid has a fabulous marquetry inlaid historical scene! This features a smoking Mount Vesuvius, resting upon the Bay of Naples, and some ruins in the foreground which represent the ruins of Pompeii. There is a little sailing boat upon the bay and some mountains to the left of the ruins. To the right of the ruins, there is a fire, probably representing Vesuvius's explosion in 79 AD.
There are beautiful crossbands of tesselated micro mosaic inlay, framing the fabulous marquetry inlaid scene. Details of this tesselated inlay can be found below.
The box is complete with its original working solid brass lock. A vintage replacement key has been fitted to this. The box also has its original solid brass piano hinge.
The box sits on turned hardwood squat bun feet.
The Micro Mosaic Tesselated Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with thousands of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many, many hours, to form a beautiful mosaic pattern. Several varieties of wood are used to add colour and dimension to the mosaic. Stain is sometimes added to the wood, also to add colour.
Mount Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius is the only active volcano in mainland Europe. It is considered to be the most dangerous in the world, because of its close proximity to Naples and the surrounding towns on nearby slopes. Vesuvius has erupted more than 50 times.

The Interior
The interior has a single spacious storage compartment that has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. The base of the compartment has a new padded satin panel and its walls have new satin linings. The satin is a beautiful teal blue shade. The padded panel provides cushioned protection for jewellery.
The lid has its original inset oval mirror, surrounded by a lovely inlaid oval frame.

Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition despite its 90 years of age! It has sound structure and all of its inlay is still present and secure.
The interior linings, being new, are neatly fitted and in unworn condition. There is one small blemish on the base panel.
The hinges are still in good working order and the box locks securely.
There is minor light wear to the Walnut, commensurate with age and honest use.
The mirror has no chips or cracks. It does have some distress which is common with boxes of this age and design. Please see the photos of the interior.
