Beautiful vintage Italian jewellery box from Sorrento. Highly figured burl wood veneer and a beautiful inlaid feature to the lid. Plush red velvety linings and Mahogany veneer to the interior. Circa 1980s/1990s.

This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1980s/1990s and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type - most of this design are much smaller. The box is musical and plays 'April Showers'.
The Exterior
This box has an eyecatching octagonal shape and beautifully contoured sides. It has a beautiful burl wood veneer which is highly figured and there is a stunning large inlaid feature upon the lid.
The entire box has been polished and varnished. This has given it a gorgeous glossy sheen and a lovely tactile smoothness.
There is a fine inlaid frame of Satinwood & Ebony wood stringing around the edges of the lid.
The beautiful inlay features a violin, a guitar, musical score sheets and pretty flowers and leaves. The inlay consists of a variety of woods that have different colours and grains.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge. It stands raised on it its original polished gold metal feet.
The bottom of the box has beautiful polished and varnished Satinwood veneer and its original song title/manufacturer's labels.
Please note: There is no key with this box.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment at the front and the musical movement is cased to the rear of this. There is shallow storage space upon the casing where small/fine/flat pieces of jewellery (pendants/rings/stud and hoop earrings etc) can be placed. The casing can be gently removed should the movement ever require attention in the future.
All of the interior has its original red plush velvety linings. The lining to the base is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid and top edges of the compartment have beautiful Mahogany veneer. This has a glossy polished and varnished finish. There is fine inlaid Satinwood and Ebony wood stringing, framing the edges of the Mahogany veneer. This matches the inlaid frame on the lid's exterior.
The Manufacturer
This box was made and hand inlaid in Italy by the firm 'Art. Decor Inlaid Wood Works'.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the tune 'April Showers'. The music was written by Louis Silvers (and its lyrics by B.G. De Sylva). It was first published and introduced in 1921 when Al Jolson performed it in the Broadway musical 'Bombo'.
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Seven turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding.
We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements that deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in very good pre-loved condition. It has sound structure and only very minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the veneer and inlay is present and intact.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition. They have some small light marks from previous jewellery storage.
The hinge has slight play but is still secure.
The musical movement is in perfect working order, as stated above.
