Beautiful vintage Italian jewellery box from Sorrento. Highly figured burl wood veneer and a beautiful inlaid feature to the lid. Plush green velvety linings and Mahogany veneer to the interior. Working lock and key.

This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1980s/1990s and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type; most of this design are smaller. The box is musical and plays 'Come Back To Sorrento'.
The Exterior
This box has an eyecatching octagonal shape and beautifully contoured sides. It has beautiful burl wood veneer which is highly figured and a stunning large inlaid urn of flowers upon the lid. The inlay consists of a variety of woods that have different colours and grains.
The entire box has been highly polished and lacquered. This finish has given it a gorgeous glossy sheen and a lovely tactile smoothness.
There is an inlaid frame of Satinwood stringing around the edges of the lid.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge. It stands raised on it its original gold resin feet.
The bottom of the box has a polished and lacquered Satinwood veneer and its original song title label.
The box also has its original working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment at the front and the musical movement is cased to the rear of this. There is further storage space upon the casing. The casing can be lifted out should the movement ever require attention.
All of the interior has its original plush green velvety linings. The lining to the base is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid and top edges of the compartment have beautiful Mahogany veneer. This has a glossy polished and lacquered finish. There is a frame of inlaid Satinwood stringing to the Mahogany veneer on the lid. This matches the frame on the lid's exterior.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the tune 'Come Back To Sorrento', a Neapolitan song which was composed in 1894 by Ernesto De Curtis.
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. Seven turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements and Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally deteriorate or malfunction over time.
We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate/malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please check the movement and lock as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in excellent vintage condition. It has sound structure and only very minor light wear, commensurate with age and honest use.
All of the veneer and inlay is present and intact. There are a few fine light surface scratches to the lid which are barely noticeable.
The interior linings are neatly fitted and in good clean condition. They have some light marks from previous jewellery storage.
The hinges, lock and musical movement are in good working order.
