This is a unique one-off bespoke vintage jewellery box, dating back to 1967. It comes from New Zealand and is made of various native specimen woods. The box was made especially for a friend and includes an original letter from the maker to the recipient.
The Exterior
This box is made of various woods that are native to New zealand. Its principal wood is Totara Knot (or burr). Another wood is a form of New Zealand Honeysuckle (often referred to as Rewarewa), this being the diagonal inlays on all four corners of the lid. The white 'square' referred to in the maker's letter, is the inlaid banding which forms the border around the central Totara veneered panel on the lid. This banding has now mellowed to a light brown colour.
The box stands raised on its original block feet and is complete with its original brass hinges. The bottom of the feet have red felt coverings which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
This is a lovely example of a marquetry inlaid box, with the maker thought to be a skilled amateur.
The Interior
The interior has its original red velvet linings. The panel to the base of the compartment is padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
Condition
This box is in very good condition for its 55 years of age. There is a tiny nick to the left side of the lid and some fine stress lines to the veneer in a few areas. None of this spoils the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
The interior velvet linings are still neatly fitted and in good condition with no splits or fraying.
