This is a fabulous vintage musical jewellery box, dating to the early 1940s. It plays the ever-popular 'White Christmas' by Bing Crosby.
The Exterior
This wonderful box is veneered and inlaid with a variety of beautiful hardwoods. The front has a beautifully inlaid Sunray design which was hugely popular throughout the 1920s and 30s Art Deco period. We can see with this box that this iconic design has been carried through to the early 1940s.
The lid, rear and both sides of the box, have very decorative veneered triangles. These have been positioned to create a beautiful symmetrical pattern.
The box has a stylish streamlined form which was also popular during the Art Deco era. Again we can see that this particular style has been carried through to the early 1940s.
The box stands raised on its original nicely shaped block feet.
The Interior
The interior has two beautiful storage compartments, divided by a solid wood partition. The musical movement is concealed beneath the right-hand side compartment.
Both compartments have their original beautiful woven silk linings with polished metal button detail. They are deeply padded, providing cushioned protection for jewellery.
The inside of the lid has its original woven silk-lined panel and fitted mirror. There is a cut-out section to the centre of the panel which has a very stylish symmetrical shape. The mirror is beautifully displayed through this section.
The box also has its original silk ribbon stay which holds the lid upright.
All of the silk is a beautiful burgundy shade.
The box has its original brass hinges.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the famous festive tune 'White Christmas', an Irving Berlin song which was first recorded in 1942 by Bing Crosby. It has also been recorded by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams and Perry Como. More recently it has been recorded by Michael Bolton (1992), Taylor Swift (2007) and Michael Buble feat Shania Twain (2014).
The movement is in good working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating the musical movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use, once boxes are purchased.
Please check that the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.
Please read our returns policy which includes our policy on musical movements.
Condition
This beautiful box is in wonderful condition. It has sound structure and very little wear, despite its 70/80 years of age.

The interior silk linings are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. The majority of the silk is still in beautiful clean condition with some minor stains in a few areas.
