The Exterior
This box is made of solid Walnut. It has amazing intricate high relief carving to the lid and all four sides of the box. The carving has been done by hand by a highly skilled master craftsman. The carving to the lid features a large spray of flowers and leaves, surrounded by a narrow frame of further smaller flowers. The carving to the sides of the box feature larger flowing flowers and leaves. The flowers to the main feature of the lid and to the sides of the box, appear to be Orchids. The sides of the lid have a beautifully carved scroll pattern.
Further information on the carving can be found below.
The box is complete with its original brass hinges, working brass lock and key.
The bottom of the box has retained its original manufacturer's label. It is wonderful to still find such a label on a box as old as this.
The Manufacturer
This box was made by MABERA & BRO (Brothers), ART MANUFACTURERS of 3rd BRIDGE, SRINAGAR, KASHMIR.
The Carving
This type of Kashmiri carving to Walnut wood is known as 'Dhun hath kaem' (translated Walnut wood work) or more simply 'Dhoon kaem' (translated Walnut work). It uses a method of hand carving which is done very carefully and delicately, with measured strokes of chipping, carving and rounding. The carving usually depicts organic forms and motifs and the work is carried out by a master craftsman (known as a Wasta or Naqash).
As you can see there is an abundance of high-quality workmanship on this box!
Further information about/on the history of Kashmir Walnut wood carving, will be sent with the box when it's shipped.
The Interior
The interior is just as beautiful as the outside of the box!
The inside of the lid is also beautifully decorated. This features exquisite carving upon a shallow carved out indentation. There is a large round disc to the centre (probably representing the sun) surrounded by beautiful large leaves and berries. These represent the leaves and fruit of the Chinar tree (Oriental plane). Further information on this tree can be found below. The leaves are crisply carved and have beautiful vein detail and the indented background has a superb textured finish which has a hessian/canvas like appearance. The Walnut to the disc has an absolutely beautiful striped grain. It has wonderful warm brown/red stripes with fine black streaks in between. The indented background enhances the leaves and berries, giving them a beautiful 3-dimensional form.
The storage area has 3 compartments, separated by solid Walnut partitions. The partitions can be removed if desired, allowing you to have a single large compartment if preferred. If you keep the 3 compartments as they are, you can place different types of jewellery into each.
There is a beautiful new padded satin lined panel to the base of the storage compartment/s. This provides cushioned protection for jewellery. The satin is a stunning emerald green shade and it gives the box a luxurious look and feel.

The Chinar Tree
This tree forms an integral part of Kahmiri culture. Almost every village in the Kashmir Valley region has a Chinar tree which is revered. This majestic tree figures notably in Kashmir's literature, politics, religion and romance. If you walk around Srinagar in Autumn, you'll see its leaves have stunning colourful hues of blood red, mauve, amber and yellow. The oldest Chinar tree in Kashmir is believed to be 700 years old. There is a strict ban on cutting these trees which host migratory birds from Siberia and Russia.
Condition
This box is in excellent vintage condition with very little wear despite its age.
The box has sound structure and there is no apparent damage to the carvings. It has clearly been very well looked after by its previous owner/s.
The hinges are still in good working order and the box locks securely.
The interior satin, being new, is in immaculate condition.
There are some light surface scratches to the bottom of the box. This is minor age-related friction wear.
There is a small nibble to the bottom front left corner of the box. This has been smoothed and is barely visible.
