Superb hand-carved vintage jewellery box from Kashmir. The interior compartment has a new padded satin panel and high-quality printed paper linings. The box is mid 20th century, circa 1950s.

This is a stunning vintage Indian jewellery box, made in Kashmir and dating to the mid 20th century. It has the most beautiful high relief hand carved decoration and the interior compartment has been newly refurbished.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Walnut. It has amazing intricate high relief carving to the lid and all four sides of the box. The carving has been done by hand by a highly skilled master craftsman. The lid features various leafy stemmed flowers and there are two birds 'hidden' amongst these! There are further flowers plus scrolling leaf decoration to all four sides of the box, and a beautifully carved Bamboo effect frame to the lid.

The box is complete with its original brass piano hinge and lock. The hinge is a quality 'stop' hinge that holds the lid upright.
Please note there is no key with this box.
As you can see this is a box of high quality. Even the bottom of the box is beautifully detailed!
There is a small handwritten number on the bottom of the box which is likely a design number, penned by its maker.
The Carving
This type of Kashmiri carving to Walnut wood is known as 'Dhun hath kaem' (translated Walnut woodwork) or more simply 'Dhoon kaem' (translated Walnut work). It uses a method of hand carving which is done very carefully and delicately, with measured strokes of chipping, carving and rounding. The carving usually depicts organic forms and motifs and the work is carried out by a master craftsman (known as a Wasta or Naqash).
As you can see there is an abundance of high-quality workmanship on this box!
The Interior
The interior is just as beautiful as the outside of the box!
The Walnut to the inside of the lid has a smooth polished finish and the compartment has been newly refurbished by ourselves. This has a new padded red satin panel and beautiful high-quality paper linings to the walls. This features colourful flowers and leaves and was chosen to complement the carved flowers on the exterior. The padded panel is fully handmade and provides cushioned protection for jewellery. The compartment is large and roomy and will hold a good amount of jewellery. It is deep enough to hold broad bangles, watches and chunky beads.
Condition
This box is in excellent vintage condition with very little wear despite its age. It has sound structure and there is no apparent damage to any of the carvings. It has clearly been very well looked after by its previous owner/s.
The hinge is still in perfect working order.
The interior satin panel and paper linings are in immaculate condition, being new.
There are some light surface scratches to the bottom of the box. This is minor age-related friction wear.
