Beautiful antique Edwardian jewellery box with an ornate brass handle and keyhole escutcheon. Quality working French lock with a secret double locking mechanism. Interior felt lining.
FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We Ship Worldwide.
This is a beautiful antique solid Oak jewellery box. It dates back to the Edwardian period and is complete with its original high-quality French lock and key.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Oak and has beautiful splined mitre joints. The lid has a lovely raised and shaped panel and the box has a beautiful plinthed base.
There is a large ornate brass handle and plate to the lid and a very ornate brass escutcheon to the keyhole. The escutcheon features a mythological gargoyle, with its mouth being the opening to the keyhole. There is a gilded finish to the brass.
Please ensure the box is locked before you lift it up by its handle.
The box is complete with its original working French lock and key. It also has its original stop hinges which hold the lid upright. There are small shallow rounded feet on the bottom of the box.
The French Lock
This box has a high-quality French lock which was designed to deter thieves from stealing its contents. It was cleverly designed so that its key could be turned TWICE, to both lock and unlock the box. The idea was that an intruder would believe the lock to be faulty when it did not open upon just one turn! The lock can, however, be operated with just one turn if desired.
The Interior
The interior has a single large storage compartment which is fully lined with felt. This is an old lining but it's not original to the box. Please see the history comments below.
History/Age
This box dates to the Edwardian period, circa 1901-1910. It probably started life as a large bible box and lined at a later date to make it suitable for storing jewellery.
Condition
This box is in wonderful antique condition. It has sound structure and no cracks or dents.
There is minor wear to the corners/edges of the plinth base.
The decorative handle and escutcheon are secure. There is one screw missing from the plate of the handle which has not caused it to become loose. There is a build of tarnish to the brass which we've left, as polishing it will remove the gilding.
The interior felt is in good condition, neatly fitted and secure.
