Stunning vintage Italian musical jewellery box from Sorrento. Beautiful burl wood veneer and colourful handcrafted inlaid Holly wreath to the lid. Plush red felt linings to the interior. Working lock and key. Circa 1980s/1990s.

This is a stunning vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1980s/1990s and is in wonderful condition. The box is a large example of its type. Most of this design are much smaller. The box is musical and plays 'JINGLE BELLS' which ties in very nicely with the festive inlay on the lid.
The Exterior
There is a beautiful stepped design to the lid and wonderful curved sides to the body of the box. The lid has a stunning hand-inlaid Holly wreath with a large bow at the bottom. The inlay consists of several varieties of wood, some of which have been stained to add beautiful colour to the box.
The entire exterior has a lovely burl wood veneer and you can see its beautiful figuration and knots.
The edges of the lid have a dark ebonised finish and the bottom of the box has Satinwood veneer. The dark streak/spots within the Satinwood are natural features of the wood. They are not stains or damage.
All of the veneer has a smooth polished finished.
The box has its original polished gold metal piano hinge. It also has its original gold metal working lock. The keyhole has a decorative polished gold metal escutcheon with embossed detail.
The box stands raised on its original gold metal feet.
The bottom of the box has retained its original song title and MADE IN ITALY labels.
The box comes with its original certificate card which guarantees the box is handcrafted by a Sorrento Master cutter.
The Interior
The interior has two storage compartments plus a long ring storage section. The musical movement is nicely cased to the left of the rear compartment. There is a perspex ledge upon the movements casing. This allows you to see the beautiful polished gold movement which complements the hinge, lock and escutcheon. The ledge can be removed should the movement ever require attention.
The entire interior has its original red plush brushed felt linings. The lining to the base of the front compartment is padded. This provides protective cushioning for jewellery.
There is further shallow storage space (1cm depth) upon the ledge of the movement's casing. You can place flat/fine pieces of jewellery here, such as Creole/Sleeper earrings, chains, pendants and brooches.
The inside of the lid and top edges of the interior have a beautiful rich Mahogany veneer.
The Maker
This box was made by the Italian firm La Botteguccia who are located in Sorrento.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the festive 'Jingle Bells' tune. This ties in nicely with the Holly wreath inlay on the lid.
The movement is in perfect working order, playing the tune at its correct tempo.
Operating The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Overwinding will result in the movement malfunctioning. Please allow the movement to fully unwind before rewinding. We are not responsible for movements that are overwound or for movements which deteriorate from further age and use once boxes are purchased.
Please check the movement is still working as soon as you receive your box. It will be checked again prior to posting.

Condition
This box is in extremely good condition. It has sound structure and only very minor light wear to the veneer on the lid. This is commensurate with age and handling.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
The interior linings are very neatly fitted and in excellent clean condition. They have very little wear which suggests the box has seen little use.
The hinge and lock are still in perfect working order. The box locks securely.
The musical movement is also in perfect working order, as stated above.
