Beautiful antique papier mache box for the storage of jewellery or trinket. Stunning hand-painted decoration to the lid. Circa 1880/1890.
This is a beautiful antique jewellery/trinket box, made of papier-mache. It was made during the late Victorian period, 1880/1890.
The exterior has a black lacquered finish and stunning hand-painted Daisies and Forget Me Not's. There is also a pretty hand-painted Butterfly. All of these subjects have Victorian symbolic meanings as detailed below. These make this box that extra bit special!
The interior has a bright crimson red lacquered finish.
The Victorian Symbolism On This Box
The Daisies symbolize purity and innocence.
The Forget Me Not's say the message 'Remember Me'.
The Butterfly symbolizes the soul - its rebirth or resurrection.
The History Of This Box
This box started life as a handkerchief box for a Victorian lady's dressing table. It now makes for a more functional trinket or jewellery box.
Condition
This beautiful box is in lovely condition for its 125 plus years of age. The colours of the painted decoration are still vivid, as is the red lacquered interior.
The black lacquered exterior has dulled a little but still has a fairly nice sheen. There is one evident nibble to one corner of the box which is mostly concealed when the lid is in situ. Other than this there is minor age-related wear to the exterior.
The interior has some marks and wear from age and use as we'd expect. The bottom of the box has some wear and surface scratches, again as we'd expect from where the box has been moved across furniture.
