Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!
This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box, made in Japan in the 1950s.
The Exterior
The box has a glossy black lacquered finish. It is beautifully decorated to the lid, front and sides, with hand-painted Japanese landscapes and temples. Mount Fuji is on the lid. The edges of the lid are further decorated with iridescent Abalone shell. This is colourful and has a beautiful shimmer.
There is a pretty engraved metal escutcheon to the keyhole and a nicely shaped metal handle on the drawer.
The box is complete with its original hinges, working lock and key.
The Interior
The interior has a large compartment on the left and a smaller compartment at the front right-hand side. Behind this is a cushioned compartment for brooches/pins. This compartment has the musical movement beneath it and can be removed should the movement ever require attention.
The inside of the lid has a storage pouch and a lovely long mirror.
The entire interior has its original ribbed blue felt linings.
There is a drawer within the bottom of the box which has a single compartment. This has a black lacquered finish.
The Musical Movement
The movement is operated via the wind-up key on the bottom of the box. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed, or when the movement is fully unwound. We have not been able to decipher the tune.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the key. Over winding could result in the movement malfunctioning.
Please note that vintage musical movements and locks can deteriorate over time. We are not responsible for those that malfunction from further age and use once boxes are purchased. Please ensure the lock and movement are working as soon as you receive your box.

Condition
This lovely box is in excellent condition for its 50 plus years of age. It is structurally sound and the lock and movement are in good working order.
There is some minor wear to the exterior but nothing unsightly to report. The lacquer has been recently buffed by our box restorer and has a glossy sheen.
The interior felt linings are still very good with no splits or fraying.
The mirror is free from chips and cracks and is still nice and clear.
