Beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in the 1940s in Jerusalem. Made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. Lovely hand painted silhouette decoration and satin lined interior.

This is a lovely vintage jewellery box, made in Jerusalem in the 1940s.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood which has beautiful figuration. It has a lovely elongated octagonal shape and beautiful hand-painted decoration to the lid. The scene on the lid features silhouetted Camels and figures, and 'Jerusalem' is above this in beautiful italic script.
The box is complete with its original fan-shaped metal clasp and its original piano hinge. This is a stop hinge which holds the lid upright.
The Olivewood has a beautiful polished and stained finish. The wood to the bottom of the box has been left in its natural state.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. The base of the compartment and the inside of the lid, have their original deep green padded satin panels. The interior walls have their original deep green satin linings.
History
This box was made as a souvenir for the Jerusalem tourist market.
About Olivewood
Olivewood has a distinctive grain and rich colour which gives it a beautiful appearance. It has characteristic brown and yellow streaks which make for a beautiful contrast. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olivewood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The Olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
Condition
This lovely old box is in good condition. It is structurally sound and has no chips or cracks.
There are tiny patches of fading and some tiny white speckles to the lid. These do not spoil the beautiful overall appearance of the box.
All of the hand-painted decoration is present.
The interior satin is still in lovely condition. It has only minor light wear and a few little marks.
The gold metal hinge has some surface wear but is still secure.
The clasp is still in great condition and keeps the lid securely closed.
