FREE UK NEXT DAY DELIVERY. We ship worldwide.
This is a beautiful rare vintage musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1950s/60s and is in complete original condition.
The Exterior
This box has a very rare novel design of a wagon being pulled by two beautiful prancing horses.
The wagon is beautifully finished with a variety of hardwood veneers. It has beautiful marquetry inlay to the top and further inlaid 'spokes' to its wheels. There are also fine bands of decorative micro mosaic inlay on either side of the lid.
The top of the wagon is the lid of the box. This has its original gold metal piano hinge which holds the lid upright at a 90-degree angle.
The horses are made of polished white metal and have lovely detailed manes and bridle gear. They are also beautifully contoured.
The wagon is beautifully displayed on its original large Mahogany veneered plinth. The wagon and horses are securely attached to this.
The design of this box was registered and is protected with a patent. It is a very rare, if not unique design. This box was certainly not mass-produced. The bottom of the wagon has retained its original BREVETTO (patent) no label. It has also retained its original 'Isola di Capri' tune title label.
All of the veneers and inlays have a beautiful polished and lacquered glossy finish.
The Interior
The interior has a single storage compartment. This has its original red, ribbed cord linings.
The inside of the lid has a beautiful ballerina who both spins around and moves up and down. She has an enamel painted bustier and an enamel painted flower on her hair. She has a lovely cream silk skirt with gold trim and a pretty gold tie around her waist. The musical movement is cased beneath the ballerina.
The inside of the lid also features its beautiful original mirrored panels. These are beautifully positioned and give the appearance of several ballerinas being present.
The Musical Movement
The movement is in very good working order. It is operated via the winding key on the back of the wagon. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
The movement plays the beautiful tune 'Isola di Capri' (translated Isle of Capri). The music is a Tango Foxtrot, written by Wilhelm Grosz. Its lyrics were written by Jimmy Kennedy and the song was first published in 1934. The song has been recorded by numerous famous artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Frankie Laine, Gracie Fields and Rosemary Clooney.
Care should be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
