This is a beautiful antique papier mache box that is suitable for jewellery, trinkets or keepsakes. It dates to the Victorian period, circa 1870/1880.
The Exterior
The exterior has a lovely black lacquered finish.
The lid has hand-painted Daisies and Forget Me Nots and also a pretty Butterfly. All of these subjects have symbolic meanings. descriptions of which are given below. The Victorians were big on symbolism and decorated many items with subjects that would be endearing for their recipients.
The lid is complete with its original 'stop' hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back.
Flower And Butterfly Symbolism
The Daisies represent purity and innocence.
The Forget Me Nots, as their name indicates, have the endearing sentiment "Remember Me".
The Butterfly represents the soul, and the rebirth and resurrection of life.
The Interior
The interior has a vibrant red lacquered finish.
History
This box started life as an expensive ladies glove box. It now makes a very beautiful box for storing jewellery, trinkets or keepsakes.
Condition
This beautiful box is in very good condition for its 130/140 years of age. The lacquer is still in lovely condition, particularly that to the interior. There are a few dull patches to that on the exterior but the majority of it is still glossy. There is some minor wear to the lacquer, mainly to the edges and bottom of the box.
The hinges are still in perfect working order.
