Beautiful antique late Victorian jewellery box with newly refurbished satin lined interior. Beautiful inlay and Walnut veneer. Original working lock and period key.
Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!
This is a beautiful antique jewellery box with a newly refurbished satin-lined interior. It dates back to the late Victorian period, circa 1890.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Walnut veneer which has a lovely grain and colour. There are beautiful wide bands of Berlin strap work inlay to both the lid and front of the box. The inlay is made up of thousands of tiny pieces of wood, beautifully put together to form a symmetrical mosaic pattern.
There is a large oval Mother of Pearl cartouche to the lid and a large oval Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. Both are inset flush into the veneer.
The box is complete with its original working lock and period key. It is also complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering. This will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished by our skilled box restorer. It has a new removable hardwood storage tray with multiple compartments, located above the original large base compartment.
The compartments in the tray, plus the inside of the lid, have beautiful new satin linings. These are a lovely powder blue shade. The tray has been French polished and stained and has a new felt covering on the bottom. This matches the covering on the bottom of the box.
The base compartment and interior walls of the lid have new quality paper linings. This is a beautiful charcoal grey paper with a pretty foliate pattern.
The large base compartment is deep and spacious. It will hold a good amount of jewellery including large pieces such as bangles, beads and watches.
The front compartment of the storage tray is the ideal shape and size for laying out necklaces and chains. The smaller rear compartments are ideal for rings, earrings, pendants and brooches.

Condition
This lovely antique box is in very good condition for its 120 years of age. It is a sturdy box with sound structure.
There are a few teeny pieces of inlay missing but this is barely noticeable. There are nibbles to the inlay on the front bottom corners of the box, again not overly noticeable. These tiny flaws are as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used.
The Mother of Pearl is still lovely with no chips or cracks.
The interior satin and paper linings are in excellent unworn condition, being new.
The lock and hinges are still in good working order.
