Superb large antique jewellery box with beautiful Rosewood veneer. Stunning refurbished satin lined interior and beautiful Mother of Pearl cartouche and lock escutcheon. Working lock and key.

This is a fabulous large antique Rosewood veneered jewellery box. It has a beautiful newly refurbished interior and its exterior has been restored. The box is mid-Victorian, circa 1860/70.
The Exterior
This box has a wonderful Rosewood veneer which has beautiful figuration and stunning rich colour. It is a sturdy, weighty, robust box.
There is a beautiful large Mother of Pearl cartouche to the lid and a complimentary Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole. Both are beautifully inlaid, set flush into the veneer, and both have lovely inlaid pewter frames. The escutcheon also has an inner inlaid brass frame.
The Mother of Pearl has a lovely iridescent shine.
The box is complete with its original brass stop hinges which hold the lid upright. It also has its original working lock and key.
There has been some restoration (where needed) to the Rosewood veneer but the majority of it is in beautiful original condition.
The bottom of the box has a new felt covering which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The Interior
The interior has been fully refurbished and looks absolutely stunning.
There is a new hardwood storage tray at the top which has been French Polished and stained. Beneath this is the box's original lower compartment and original drawer.
The tray has multiple different sized compartments. The two larger centre compartments are an ideal size for bangles, watches and necklaces. The smaller compartments on either side are ideal for smaller pieces of jewellery such as pendants, rings, earrings and brooches etc. The tray has new red satin linings and a new felt covering on the bottom. It also has new metal handles which allow you to lift it up with ease.
The lower compartment is large and fairly deep. It is roomy enough for broad bangles and watches and chunky beads. It is also a good length for laying out necklaces, chains and bracelets. This compartment has a new red satin padded panel and new red satin linings to the walls.
The inside of the lid has a new red satin padded panel and new red satin linings to the walls. It is also adorned with beautiful cord trim which has shiny red and glittery gold thread.
The drawer has been relined with quality red paper. Its beautiful slanted top edges have retained their original embossed gilt decoration. This has a beautiful fine leafy pattern. A drop handle from the Victorian period has been added to the drawer. The drawer has a sprung locking mechanism and stays securely closed until it is released. You release the drawer by simply pushing the button between the hinges. Further details about the mechanism are below.

Condition
This wonderful large box is in fabulous condition for its 150/60 years of age.
There are some minor fine hairline cracks to the veneer which are age related. These aren't very obvious and the veneer is in great condition overall.
The hinges and lock are still in good working order. The tip of the right lug of the lock keep is missing but this does not affect the locking.
The spring to the locking mechanism of the drawer has weakened slightly with age. This is occasionally temperamental and will not push open the drawer when the release button is pressed. When this occurs you can release the drawer by pushing the button and gently pulling the drawers' handle.
The interior linings, being new, are in excellent unworn condition.
