Stylish high-quality Art Deco jewellery box with makers stamp. Beautiful Alligator skin covering and original working lock and key. The interior has its original velvet and watered silk linings.
Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!
This is a beautifully lined Art Deco jewellery box with a stylish briefcase design. It dates to the 1930s and is covered with valuable Alligator skin. It was made by the manufacturers Finnigans, known for being one of Britain's finest luxury goods makers. Further information about Finnigans is below.
The Exterior
This box has a real Alligator skin covering which is a lovely deep burgundy shade. It has a beautiful high-quality sprung brass catch/lock and its original brass bow key. You release the catch by pushing down the domed button to the left of the keyhole.
The lid has a beautifully stitched carrying strap.
The Alligator Skin
The Alligator skin has been beautifully polished. It is smooth and has a glossy sheen. The Alligator skin to the bottom of the box shows its distinctive umbilical scar on the right-hand side. This is more elaborate than that of a Crocodile's scar because of its lovely webbed pattern. This makes Alligator skin much more sought after and in turn more expensive than crocodile skin.
The Interior
The top of the interior has two compartments incorporated with ring storage sections. Beneath these is a further single compartment which is larger in size. The top compartments slide out to the side via high-quality brass cantilever hinges.
All three compartments and the ring storage sections have their original velvet linings which are a dark chocolate brown shade. The inside of the lid and its flap, plus the bottoms of the top compartments, have their original silk linings. There are two beautifully stitched and pleated silk pockets to the inside of the lid. The silk is high-quality watered silk. It is a lovely deep chocolate brown shade with decorative red vertical stripes. There is a small sewing pin between the two pockets which is original to the box. We have therefore left it in situ.
The Maker
This box was made by FINNIGANS of MANCHESTER & LIVERPOOL. Finnigans was established in the 19th century, originally in Manchester then expanding to Liverpool and New Bond Street of London. They were once one of Britain's finest leather goods makers. They manufactured and produced luxury goods such as jewellery boxes, games boxes, trunks, cases and bags (including Doctor's bags), as well as jewellery, timepieces and silverware.
Finnigans embossed gold-lettered makers' stamp can be seen inside the lid. Their stamp, the high standard of workmanship and the beautiful materials used, are all indicative of the high-quality of this box.
Condition
This box is still in lovely condition despite its 85 plus years of age.
The interior silk and velvet linings are still in very good condition. They are neatly fitted and have no stains. There is one fine split within the left pocket to the inside of the lid.
There is minor age/friction wear to the bottom of the box. There are fine splits/wear to each side of the lids bottom fold. These are barely noticeable when the lid is closed. This wear is as we'd expect on a box of this age which has been loved and used. Please see the numerous photos provided.
The hinges and catch/lock are still in good working order.
