Superb antique jewellery box with its original high quality Bramah lock and key. Red leather finish with crosshatch pattern and two storage trays with their original velvet coverings and padded satin panels.
Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!
This is a superb antique jewellery box with a red leather finish. It has its original high quality working Bramah lock and also its original key. This is rare with Bramah locks, most often they are lost. The box dates to around 1910.
The Exterior
The exterior has a fabulous deep red leather finish. The leather has a textured crosshatch pattern and has been refinished by our skilled box restorer. It is newly waxed and has a lovely glossy sheen.
The lid has its original decorative white metal plate and swing handle. It also has its original complimentary long white metal piano hinge. This is a quality 'stop' hinge which holds the lid upright.
The box has its original working BRAMAH lock and key. It also has its original key which is rare as most often Bramah locks are missing their keys.
About Bramah Locks
Bramah locks are superb patented locks (patented since the 18th century) with a unique locking mechanism. A box fitted with a Bramah lock is invariably a strong indicator of high quality and an expensive retail price. All antique locks manufactured by the Bramah company are stamped BRAMAH LONDON. This is the case with the lock on this box, please view image 9.
A document with further details about Bramah locks (including instructions on how to operate them) and the history of the Bramah company, will be sent along with the box.
Instructions on how to care for leather finished boxes will also be sent with this box.
The Interior
The interior has TWO storage trays with multiple compartments and there is a further larger compartment beneath these.
The top tray has 3 central storage compartments plus ring storage sections on each side.
The centre compartment has a circular ring which was originally designed to hold a pocket watch. This would now look lovely with a large locket or pendant inside it, and a linked bracelet or narrow bangle can be placed around it if desired. This compartment is finished with beautiful soft velvet.
The surrounding three compartments are ideal sizes for small pieces of jewellery such as pendants, earrings and brooches. These all have their original padded red satin panels.
The ring storage sections are also finished with soft velvet. Each section will hold approximately 7 rings, depending on their size and width.
The bottom tray has two wide rectangular compartments. These also have their original padded red satin panels. They are an ideal shape and size for laying out chains/necklaces.
Please note the bottom tray may be a replacement. Its leather has a slightly different shade of red and texture. Regardless it is definitely a period tray of around 1910.
The large base compartment plus the inside of the lid, also have their original padded red satin panels. The base compartment is deep and spacious, roomy enough for larger pieces of jewellery such as wide bangles, watches and beads.
Both trays, the interior walls of the lid, and the base compartment, all have their original red leather linings/finish.
The leather inside the lid has the same textured crosshatch pattern as the leather to the exterior.
The top tray has tooled gilt detail along the edges and is complete with its leather pull tabs.
Condition
This box is in amazing condition for its age with just a few small areas of wear to the leather.
The interior velvet and satin linings are still neatly fitted and in lovely condition with no splits or fraying. There are a few teeny marks to the satin which are in no way unsightly.
The hinge and lock are still in excellent working order.
