Beautiful 1930s Italian vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. Made of solid Olive wood. Beautiful hand painted Swallows to the lid and quilted pink silk to the interior. Working lock and key.

This is a beautiful vintage jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1930s and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box is made of solid Olivewood. The lid has beautiful hand-painted Swallows, surrounded by an inlaid mosaic frame.
There is a lovely curved design to the front of the lid and the box is complete with its original hinges.
Swallow Symbolism
The Swallows on this box were most likely added as a form of symbolism. The Swallow represents the safe journey home of a loved one.
About Olive Wood
Olive wood has a distinctive grain and rich colour, and characteristic brown and yellow streaks. These features make it a sought after wood for decorative items such as jewellery boxes.
Olive wood is also favoured for its hardness. It is a strong durable wood with a fairly high density, and it takes well to cutting and polishing.
The olive tree primarily grows in the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. Its wood has been used for many years by Italian box makers in particular. It is also a favoured wood in areas of the Holy Lands such as Jerusalem.
The Interior
The interior has two compartments at the top and a further larger compartment beneath. The top compartments are hinged and swing open to the side. All three compartments have their original quilted pink silk panels and silk linings.
The inside of the lid has its original inset mirror. This is nicely framed by pink silk cord which has a twisted 'rope' design.
Condition
This wonderful old box is in very good condition for its 80 plus years of age.
All of the inlay and paint is present, and the box has sound structure.
The interior silk, being original, has some light marks/light staining and light wear. This is commensurate with age and honest use.
The hinges are in good working order and the box locks securely.
The mirror has become cloudy/distressed from age.
