This is a beautifully decorated vintage jewellery box. It was made in Japan in the 1960s and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
The box has a lovely black lacquered finish and hand painted Japanese landscape scenes. The scenes are on the lid and on all four sides of the box. They feature Mount Fuji, temples, sailing boats, mountains and trees.
The large scene on the lid is surrounded by a beautiful diamond shaped frame. This is inlaid with shimmery irridescent Abalone shell. The rest of the lid has beautiful painted hearts and painted gold motifs.
There is a pretty metal escutcheon to the keyhole with engraved detail.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key. The key has a pretty cut out heart.
The Interior
The interior has a lift-up section at the top which has a shallow storage tray and 2 drawers. Beneath this is a larger and deeper compartment.
The top section raises up on its own accord as you open the lid of the box. It is attached to quality cantilever hinges which allow this automatic lift-up mechanism. This section has a lacquered and painted finish to match the box's exterior.
The musical movement is cased to the right of the lower compartment. The casing has a black lacquered cover which can be removed should the movement ever require attention.
The inside of the lid has a fitted mirror. This is a beautiful diamond shape and has a hand-painted scene of a Geisha girl in a Rickshaw.
The drawers, lower compartment, and the inside of the lid, all have blue ribbed cord linings. The drawers have lovely curved metal handles.
The Musical Movement
The movement plays the beautiful classical tune 'Fur Elise' by Beethoven. This was composed in 1810 but was not published until 1867, 40 years after Beethoven's death.
Operating The Movement
The movement is operated via the winding key on the bottom of the box. 3 winds of the key are all that's required to operate the movement.
The music stops, as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
Notes On Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
Care must be taken not to overwind the movement. Over winding will result in the movement malfunctioning.
Vintage movements/locks are already old and so will naturally have some wear from age and use. They may occasionally malfunction or deteriorate over time. We are not responsible for movements/locks that may deteriorate or malfunction from further age and use once a box is purchased. Neither are we responsible for movements that malfunction from overwinding.
Please ensure the movement and lock are working as soon as you receive your box. They will be checked again prior to posting.
You can view our full returns policy which includes musical movements and locks, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
Condition
This lovely box is in very good vintage condition. It has sound structure and the musical movement and lock are in good working order.
The interior felt linings are still neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying. The lining to the shallow storage tray has some discolouration.
The mirror is still lovely and has no chips or cracks. There is a little loss of paint to the Geisha scene.
The exterior is still lovely with just slight fading to the lacquer. There are a few small pieces of the Abalone shell missing but this is barely noticeable.
