This is a wonderful large antique jewellery box. It dates back to the Regency period, circa 1810/1820, and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
This box has a beautiful Flame Mahogany veneer and a wonderful sarcophagus shape. It stands raised on solid Oak squat bun feet and is complete with its original working lock and key. It is also complete with its original 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back.
The Mahogany veneer has a warm rich colour and superb figuration.
The bottom of the box has a textured paper covering. This was added by the previous owner, many years ago in the 1970s.
Note
The lock is a little stiff. Please see our notes on antique locks below.
About Flame Mahogany
Flame Mahogany (also known as 'crotch-cut' Mahogany) is cut at the crotch where a limb protruded from the trunk of the tree. This produces the beautiful flame like figuration that can be seen within the veneer of this box.
The Interior
The interior of this box was fully refurbished by its previous owner in the 1970s. Its large base compartment, its storage tray, plus the inside of the lid, all have patterned fabric panels and linings. The panel to the inside of the lid is deeply padded. The bases to the compartments in the storage tray have brushed felt linings. The fabric is a high quality textured Brocade. A lovely cushioned, brushed felt pad, was also made for the large base compartment at the time of its refurbishment.
Condition
This superb antique box is in very good condition for its 200 years of age. It is a solid weighty box with sound structure. It has has some old repairs to some of the corners but these have been done well. Other than this it has minor wear and minor light surface scratches. These are not very noticeable.
The wear is as we'd expect on a box of this age, that has been used for its purpose. You can see from its repairs and its previous refurbishment, that its original owner loved and took care of this box. They have kept it looking very presentable.
The hinges are still securely attached and in good working order. The lock is a little stiff as highlighted above.
