Beautiful Art Deco jewellery box with rare tropical Macassar Ebony veneer. Beautiful original red satin linings to the interior.
This is a beautiful Art Deco jewellery box, dating to the mid-1930s. Its exterior has a Macassar Ebony wood veneer and there is a lovely shaped chrome knob on the lid.
The Macassar Ebony veneer on this box has two varieties of cut. That to the lid is crown cut and that to all four sides is quarter cut. Using two cuts displays the different grains, figuration and stripes within the wood and makes for a beautiful contrast! The veneer has a glossy polished and varnished finish.
There is a description of Macassar Ebony further down this page.
The base of the box has its original felt covering and the box has its original gold metal stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back.
The Interior
The interior has a removable storage tray with two individual compartments and a larger single compartment beneath. The tray is made of Cedarwood and has its original simulated leather covering on the base.
All of the compartments and the inside of the lid have their original padded red satin linings.
About Macassar Ebony
Macassar Ebony is a tropical wood with beautiful black and chocolate brown stripes. It is hard and heavy and polishes to a beautiful finish. It is a well-suited wood for decorative items because of its beautiful characteristic stripes and also for the finish that can be achieved with it.
Macassar Ebony is also known as Coromandel, Calamander and Variegated Ebony. Macassar (or Makassar) Ebony trees are found on the Asian, Indian and African continents. The trees are rarely seen these days and the timber from them is becoming scarce. As a result, it is now among the highest-priced timbers in the world.
Condition
This wonderful box is in lovely condition for its 80 years of age. It is structurally sound and has no knocks. There is some age-related wear to the exterior veneer as we'd expect on a box of this age. There are superficial light scratches within the varnish around the bottom of the box. The wear to the lid is a little heavier.
There is some wear to the felt covering on the base of the box but the majority of it is still intact.
The interior satin linings are in excellent condition with no splits, pulls or fraying. From the inside, the box appears to have been seldom used.
