Beautiful Japanese musical jewellery box with a lovely piano shape. Vintage, circa 1950s. Glossy black lacquered finish and shimmery Mother of Pearl inlay.
This is a beautiful vintage musical jewellery box. It was made in the 1950s and has an interesting and eye-catching piano design. It was made in Japan and has its original Japanese Fuji 18 note musical movement. We have not deciphered the title of its tune which is cheerful and uplifting!
The Exterior
The box has a glossy black lacquered finish and is elaborately decorated on the lid and sides. The lid in particular is very beautiful! This has a stunning scene that features two large flowers and a beautiful bird in flight. These have all been painted by hand and have a wonderful raised texture. The paint is enamel and in shades of shimmery silver and gold. The lid is further decorated with iridescent mother of pearl shell inlay and this is also applied to the 'keys' section of the piano.
The front and curving side of the box is also hand-painted and features silver and gold foliage and flowers.
There is a very pretty engraved escutcheon to the keyhole and the box is complete with its original lock and key. It also has its original stop hinges which prevent the lid from falling too far back.
There are 3 stylish turned feet on the box, detailed with gold hand-painted bands.
The Interior
The interior has a lift-up storage tray which automatically rises when you open the lid. The tray has a single storage compartment and is lacquered and painted to compliment the exterior decoration. The tray rises smoothly with its original white metal cantilever hinges.
Beneath the tray is a further, larger single compartment. The musical movement is cased to the right of this and has a lovely black lacquered and hand-painted cover.
There is a nice fitted mirror to the inside of the lid. This is framed by a ribbed cord panel and both compartments are lined with the same fabric.
Note
This is a rarer example of a Japanese lacquered box. Most of this type have a standard box form whereas this one has a much more stylish novelty shape!
Operating The Musical Movement
The music is operated via a wind-up key on the base of the box. 4 turns of the key are sufficient to play the tune in full. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement is fully unwound.
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the key.
Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 65 plus years of age. It is structurally sound and free of damage. There are some pieces of the mother of pearl inlay missing but this doesn't spoil the very attractive overall appearance of the box. Other than this there are a few small areas where the black lacquer is missing, mainly around the bottom edges of the box and on one foot from where the winding key is turned.
The lacquer still has a beautiful sheen and the colours of the paint are still vibrant.
The interior linings are in beautiful condition. They are neatly fitted and have no splits or fraying.
The musical movement is currently in perfect working order and plays the tune at its correct speed. Its cover lifts off easily should it ever require attention in the future.
The box locks securely with its key.
Note
Please note that vintage musical movements can deteriorate over time. We are not responsible for those that wear or malfunction from further age and use once purchased.
