Stunning high quality early Victorian jewellery box decorated with an array of Mother of Pearl and white metal inlays. Newly refurbished satin lined interior. Circa 1840 - 1850.
Please contact us if you are looking for a similar box and we will endeavour to source one for you!
This is a beautiful high-quality antique jewellery box. It dates back to the early Victorian period, circa 1840/1850. The box has a beautifully refurbished interior and a hidden inscription written by one of its early owners.
The Exterior
This box has a fabulous Rosewood veneer which has beautiful figuration and a lovely rich colour.
The lid has an array of iridescent Mother of Pearl inlaid flowers. It also has beautiful white metal inlay used for the scrolling stems/vines of the flowers. The metal is probably silver but we cannot confirm this. It is far too fine to have been able to bear a hallmark and we cannot acid test it as doing so could damage the wood.
The lid has its original quality steel handle which is beautifully shaped and sculpted along the top.
There is a replacement Mother of Pearl escutcheon to the keyhole which compliments the Mother of Pearl on the lid.
The lid has a lovely lightly domed shape.
The box is complete with its original 'stop' hinges, lock and key. The hinges hold the lid upright.
There is a new felt covering on the bottom of the box which will protect the surfaces of furniture.
The box is quite small but is beautifully decorated and of extremely high quality. It is perfect for a small collection of jewellery.
Note
Please note the lock is no longer functional and the key is for decorative purposes only.
The Interior
The interior has been beautifully refurbished by our skilled box restorer.
There are three new compartments which have beautiful new cream satin linings. The two side compartments have beautiful lids, taken from another Victorian box. These have their original padded red silk coverings. There are beautiful new brass knobs on the lids and the undersides of the lids have new cream satin coverings, matching the linings in the compartments.
The inside of the lid has a new quality patterned paper lining. The paper is embossed and has a beautiful deep plum colour. It has lighter plum flowers and leaves and gold highlights to the stems.
Hidden Inscription
During the internal refurbishment of this box, an ink inscription was found on the inside of the lid. This reads V.Mariboe and has the dates 1862 and 1886. This has been left and is concealed behind the new paper lining.
A little card with this information will be sent along with the box.
