This is a lovely antique solid Mahogany jewellery box with beautiful Flame Mahogany veneers. It dates back to the Regency period, circa 1810/1820, and has a newly refurbished interior.
The Exterior
The lid has a frame of Flame Mahogany veneers which have formed a decorative geometric pattern. The Mahogany has a beautiful warm rich colour and superb figuration. There is a paragraph below with further information about this particular variety of Mahogany.
The box is complete with its original brass 'stop' hinges which prevent the lid from falling back. It is also complete with its original working solid brass lock and key.
There is a beautiful teardrop shaped bone escutcheon to the keyhole.
The bottom of the box has a recently added, new felt covering. This will protect the surfaces of your furniture.
About Flame Mahogany
Flame Mahogany (also known as 'crotch-cut' Mahogany) is cut at the crotch where a limb protruded from the trunk of the tree. This produces the beautiful flame like figuration.
The Interior
The interior of this box has been fully refurbished. It has a new removable hardwood storage tray with multiple compartments, above the original large base compartment.
The compartments in the tray, plus the inside of the lid, all have beautiful new blue satin linings. The top edges of the tray have been finished with gold paint and the base of the tray has a new felt covering. There are blue silk pull tabs on the sides of the tray to enable you to remove it with ease.
The large base compartment has a beautiful new padded blue satin panel. This compartment is deep and very spacious. It will hold a good amount of jewellery including large pieces such as bangles, beads and watches.
Condition
This lovely antique box is in very good condition despite its 200 years of age. It is a solid robust box of sound structure.
The Mahogany is still beautiful overall. There are some minor light surface scratches and some minor fine hairline cracks to the veneer on the lid. There is a minor old small repair to the top rear right corner of the lid, and a tiny piece of veneer missing to the front right corner of the lid. The wear is as we'd expect on a box of this age that has been loved and used for its purpose.
The lock and hinges are still in perfect working order, and the linings being new are in excellent condition.
