This is a beautiful Italian musical jewellery box, made in Sorrento, Italy. It dates to the 1930s Art Deco period and is complete with its original working lock and key.
The Exterior
The exterior has several varieties of hardwood veneers and has beautiful curvature to the sides. The lid features inlaid Italian dancers and these are surrounded by a beautiful inlaid tessellated mosaic frame. The dancers have been created from various woods, with those to the skirt and trousers having been stained. This has added a lovely splash of colour to the inlay. The tessellated mosaic frame features flowers and leaves. There is a description about tessellated mosaic inlay further down this page.
The box stands raised on its original, beautifully turned, acorn-shaped feet.
The box is complete with its original working lock and key, and its original piano hinge. This is a quality stop hinge which prevents the lid from extending too far back.
The Interior
The interior of this box is completely original. It has a single storage compartment to the left, and the casing to the musical movement to the right.
The compartment and the casing to the musical movement have plump quilted satin panels, and the walls to the interior are lined with matching satin. The satin is a lovely powder blue colour.
There is a lovely deep set oval mirror to the inside of the lid, surrounded by an inlaid oval frame.
The Musical Movement
This is a quality Swiss 'Echo' 18 note musical movement. It winds up via the key on the bottom of the box and plays a pretty tune which we've not been able to decipher. 5 turns of the key are sufficient to fully wind up the musical movement. The music plays a little fast but stops as it should when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
Notes About Vintage Musical Movements And Locks
As with all musical movements, care should be taken not to overwind them with the key.
Vintage locks and musical movements can occasionally malfunction at any time. They are already old and will naturally have some wear from age and use. We are not responsible for locks or movements that malfunction from further age and use, once the box is purchased.
You can view our full returns policy which includes locks and musical movements, by visiting our Payments And Returns page.
Mosaic Tesselation Inlay
This type of inlay is skillfully created with hundreds of tiny pieces of wood. It is painstakingly put together over many, many hours, to form a beautiful mosaic pattern. Several varieties of wood are used, some of which are stained, to add colour and dimension to the mosaic.
Condition
This wonderful box is in lovely condition for its 80 plus years of age. The exterior is excellent with no loss or damage to any of the veneer or inlay.
The silk to the interior has picked up some staining over the years, as we'd expect on a genuine old box which has been loved and used for its purpose. There are no splits or fraying to the satin.
We do not recommend cleaning the satin as doing so could spoil its colour.
Note
This box may not make a suitable gift for those who prefer an interior which is in perfect condition. It will be most suited to those who love the charm of a box with signs of use.
