This is a very rare vintage jewellery box, dating to the 1940s/1950s. It was made in Switzerland and it has a beautifully inlaid Medieval church scene.
The Exterior
This box has an unusual octagonal shape and a stylish bulbous form. It has a beautiful rich Walnut veneer and a rare interlocking lid.
The lid has a beautiful large inlaid scene of a mountainous Medieval Swiss church. This probably depicts a real Swiss church, located somewhere in the beautiful Swiss Alps. The background of the scene which represents the sky, is made from beautiful Burl Walnut veneer. The inlay itself consists of several varieties of wood which includes a darker Burl Walnut. This contrasts beautifully against the lighter Burl Walnut. There are beautiful fine strips of banded inlay surrounding the scene.
The Walnut on the rest of the box has beautiful figuration. This consists of numerous separate pieces of veneer which are beautifully positioned and joined. The veneer to the main body of the box has been skilfully positioned to create diamond shape patterns in the centre of each bulbous side.
The lid has a rare and clever interlocking closure. It has 3 thick solid wooden panels which slide and lock into the panels within the compartment.
The box is complete with its original shaped feet. New cushioned felt pads have been added to these, to protect the surfaces of furniture. These have replaced the original pads which were extremely worn due to age and friction.
The Interior
The interior has a single large storage compartment. This has a new cerise felt lining on the base. The walls are unlined.
Instructions For The Interlocking Closure
1. Position the main body of the box so that the wooden panels within the compartment are positioned as per the interior photo provided.
2. With the scene on the lid upright, slide the lid from left to right, across the body of the box, so that its wooden bars slide into those within the compartment.
There is a certain knack to the interlocking closure but it is easy to master.
We do not recommend lifting the box up by its lid as by doing this you risk damaging the wooden panels. This could also result in the lid sliding out of position which in turn could cause you to drop and damage the box. Always lift the box by its body and remove the lid over a soft surface.
Condition
This wonderful box is in excellent condition for its 70 plus years of age.
All of the inlay is present and intact.
There is minor light age-related wear to the veneer.
A couple of the joints have minor age and stress related wear/fine separation. This wear has not affected the good sound structure of the box.
