Beautiful Italian musical jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s. Primarily made of Mahogany wood and with various exotic hardwood inlays.
This is a beautiful Italian musical jewellery box, made in Italy in the 1930s. It is primarily made of Mahogany wood and has various exotic hardwood inlays.
The inlay has a decorative oriental design. It features beautiful winged dragons and scrolling vines with flowers. It is present on both the lid and all four sides of the box. The large scene on the lid is beautifully surrounded with a frame of inlaid stringing. There are beautiful curved bands of inlay along each side of the lid. This curved inlay is also present on the feet of the box. This is a sign of a high-quality box. The feet on most Italian boxes of this design are made solely from plain plywoods. The feet on this box have been decorated with inlaid veneers on the outside.
The interior of this box is completely original. It has two swing opening compartments at the top and a further larger compartment beneath. The compartments have plump quilted satin bases and the interior walls are lined with matching satin. The satin has a beautiful salmon pink colour.
There is a lovely oval mirror to the inside of the lid. This is deeply set and has a beautiful inlaid frame.
The box has its original hinges and lock, all of which are in good working order. It is complete with its original period key which locks the box securely.
The musical movement is to the right of the lower compartment. It is nicely cased and concealed by its quilted satin cover. The music is operated via the wind-up key on the base of the box. The tune is very pretty but we have not been able to decipher its title.
Operating The Musical Movement
4 to 5 turns of the key are sufficient to wind up the musical movement. The music stops as it should, when the lid is closed or when the movement has fully unwound.
As with all musical boxes, care should be taken not to overwind the movement.
Condition
This wonderful box is in lovely condition for its 85 years of age. There is some fading to the dark veneer and some nibbling to the wood along the bottom edge of the lock flap. This is modest age-related wear and it does not spoil the overall beautiful appearance of the box.
The silk to the interior has picked up some staining over the years. This is as we'd expect from a genuine old box which has been loved and used.
We do not recommend cleaning the satin as doing so could spoil the colour.
The box may not make a suitable gift for those who prefer an interior which is in perfect condition. It will be most suited to those who love the charm of a box with signs of use.
