This is a beautiful vintage wooden box for jewellery and/or trinkets. It was made in the 1930s/40s in the Tatra Mountains in Poland, for a reputable English firm who were established in the 19th century. Further details on this are below.
The Exterior
The lid has two beautiful inset silk prints. These are surrounded by decorative oval frames which have scalloped poker work detail. The prints are padded and feature lovely little girls and boys with scenic backgrounds. There are also beautiful roundels on the lid with pretty flowers, textured wood and fine brass detail.
There are bands of ribbed poker work running all the way around the bottom of the box and inlaid brass detail along the top edges of these.
The box is complete with its original stop hinges. These prevent the lid from falling back. The bottom of the box has its original manufacturer's information label.
The exterior has a warm mahogany stained finish.
History/Manufacturer
This box was made by skilled craftsmen from the Tatra Mountains in Poland. It was made to a specified design of the English manufacturer J&J Cash. This firm was established back in 1846 and at this time they were England's leading silk ribbon manufacturer. The firm are still in production today and are well known for their quality woven items such as name labels, personalised luggage straps and bookmarks.
The Interior
The interior is made of cedarwood and has multiple partitioned storage compartments. There are three compartments on the left-hand side and two compartments in a removable storage tray on the right. There is also a further larger compartment beneath the removable tray. All of the compartments are unlined.
Condition
This lovely box is in very good condition for its 70/80 years of age. It has suffered one minor small knock on the bottom of the back right corner which has had a sufficient repair. This slight knock hasn't affected the structure of the box. Please see image 6 above. Other than this the box is lovely with just minor wear from age and use. The silk prints are still in perfect condition. They have no stains, splits or fraying.
