This is a beautiful high-quality vintage jewellery box with superb inlay to both the exterior and interior. It dates to the 1950s and is in wonderful condition.
The Exterior
This fabulous box is inlaid all over with a variety of beautiful hardwoods.
The lid has a stylish raised panel in the centre, surrounded by beautiful inlaid bands.
The front and back have inlaid triangular pieces of wood, all beautifully positioned to create a very decorative geometric pattern.
The sides have decorative chequered inlay.
The box has a beautiful streamlined design, reminiscent of designs from the 1930s Art Deco period. It is complete with its original high-quality butt hinges which allow the lid to extend back fully.
The bottom of the box has a hardboard panel.
The box stands slightly raised on its original feet.
This stunning box is a very fine example of the art of geometric marquetry inlay. The design of this box is reminiscent of the designs by the renowned New Zealand box and cabinet maker, William Norrie.
The Interior
The interior has stunning chequered inlay to both the storage compartment and the inside of the lid. The chequered pattern has been created by the beautiful positioning of large square pieces of colourful hardwoods.
A padded satin panel has been made for the compartment, to protect the jewellery of the new owner. The satin is a beautiful indigo blue shade. The back of the panel has a high-quality, durable paper covering. There is a lovely blue silk pull tab on the panel, which allows you to remove it with ease. The panel has been designed to be removed, in order to reveal the beautiful chequered inlay. It has been made by our wonderful skilled box restorer.
